Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style). Maximum four members to a group.
All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of FOUR images per candidate.

As of date of posting: Potentially level 4, but at the moment mid to high level 3. Make just a few changes to really improve. 42/60
ReplyDeleteCover: Mid Level 3. This has all the right elements, but it needs reorganising. There is something not quite right about the central image. It may just need some size adjustment and colour/contrast manipulation but I am not sure yet. The masthead is really good and the elements on the page are fine, but they feel haphazard in arrangement. Rearrange to create a smoother look.
Contents: Low Level 3. This is pretty unconvincing as a real contents page, despite the really good photo on it. I will make a few suggestions that might work. Experiment. Try making the bottom photo go all the way across the page and perhaps including a smaller image somewhere else to make up the 4 original images that you need. Get rid of the musical notes. Make the feature headlines the same but the supporting text a lot smaller. Add more features if you have space.
Double Page spread: Despite some problems, this still manages to be level 4. I really like it. However, please do the following things. Increase contrast on image and make it bigger. Think about where the centre line is and consider how that will affect someone reading the double page.
Finally, you need to find a way to add in another original image to make 4.

ReplyDeletePlanning and Research: 15/20
Planning and research is complete. Excellent work on target audience and proficient research into codes and conventions of existing magazines. Really good planning of photography, shows good evidence of excellent organisation. Good work on mockups. Time management is good. While there are some elements of excellence, the research and planning is high end level 3 rather than low level 4.
Production: 46/60
The double page spread is the strongest part, it is thoroughly excellent and lifts the whole production. Excellent photography and excellent work on layout and design. The contents page is good. Layout and design is edging toward level 4, and the photography as a whole lifts it. The front cover is weaker. The image is not well edited and the care taken on layout and design is on the very bottom of level 3. On balance, there is enough level 4 to lift this to the top of level 3, but not enough to take it into level 4.
Evaluation: 15
Proficient use of ICT, but low in the band. The discussion of codes and conventions, institutions, audience, technology and representation is proficient. There is high level proficiency in the discussion of outcomes and in the progression from prelim to main task. Overall, deserving of a high level 3.
