evaluation preliminary task

Evaluation

How well does your preliminary task fulfill the brief?

The brief was completed within my Front cover and contents page of ‘Student’ magazine which i created through the use of Photoshop, using my own photographs. This magazine is aimed at school students (which meets the brief requirements). It is more towards a female audience which I hoped to make obvious through use of colour and girly associated vocabulary. I could have possibly made the shot closer to fit more within the medium close up shot accurately.

What obstacles did you overcome in order to complete the preliminary task?
I wasn’t so confident with using Photoshop as I have only used it briefly when at home, but I felt this small experience helped with the making of the magazine, for I just had to play around a little with the programme to finish with a magazine in which I was satisfied with.

How could you have improved the production values of your preliminary task?
There are a couple of things I feel I could have adapted to improve the quality of my preliminary task, such as taking an image with slightly better lighting, although this was then fixed upon the use of Photoshop. I also would have liked to know how to edit my font in different more edgy ways, so could have watched tutorials in order to do this. The front cover of my magazine could have been made more girly possibly by adding more pinks and effects.

What tutorials did you use in order to help you complete the preliminary task?
I didn’t watch any tutorials to help with this task; however I did begin to watch one on YouTube but did not find it useful as it was not very clear to follow. I used knowledge based on what I already knew about Photoshop and worked around with it until I was pleased with the result.

What important lessons have you learned in preparation for completing your main task?
I have learnt more skills on Photoshop in order to benefit the completion of my main task. I now have a rough guideline of what the main task will look like and have a structure to follow instead of having nothing to look back on and gain ideas from. I have learnt that there is information online if needed when unsure.

-TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Research into the target audience of vogue magazine:

The British edition of Vogue is a fashion magazine that has been published since the autumn of 1916. The magazine's current editor stated that, “Vogue’s power is universally acknowledged. It’s the place everybody wants to be if they want to be in the world of fashion" and 85% of the magazine’s readers agree that “Vogue is the Fashion Bible”. The magazine is considered to be one that links fashion to high society and class, teaching its readers how to ‘assume a distinctively chic and modern appearance’. As a branch-off of American Vogue, British Vogue is a magazine whose success is based upon its advertising rather than its sales revenue. In 2007, it ran 2,020 pages of advertising at an average of £16,000 a page. It is deemed to be more commercial than other editions of Vogue. BritishVogue is the most profitable British magazine as well as the most profitable edition of Voguebesides the US and Chine editions.Research into the target audience of billboard magazine:
The target audience for Billboard magazine varies from young teens, from the age of 16, to young adults, at the age of 26. This is because the magazine provides its readers with the latest updates from the charts, but different and various types of genres.
This is to widen the range of the target audience as it acquired to people who listen to different genres such as rock, metal, pop, RnB and many more.

As all magazine Elle sticks to the same style production for each issue. A bold title filling the top of the page, a famous celebrity posed across the whole page, with the colour scheme staying the same though the cover with also a main ‘headline’ to make the reader want to buy it. This as a style point makes the magazine stand out in the fashion market, making it unique.

Research into the target audience of Blender magazine:

Blender was an American music magazine that billed itself as "the ultimate guide to music and more". It was also known for sometimes steamy pictorials of celebrities. It compiled lists of albums, artists, and songs, including both "best of" and "worst of" lists. In each issue, there was a review of an artist's entire discography, with each album being analyzed in turn.Blender was published by Dennis publishing. The magazine began in 1994 as the first digital CD-ROM magazine by Jason Pearson, David Cherry, and Regina Joseph, acquired by Felix Dennis/Dennis Publishing, UK it published 15 digital CD issues, and launched on the web in 1997. It started publishing a print edition again in 1999 in its most recent form. Blender CD-ROM showcased the earliest digital editorial formats, as well as the first forms of digital advertising. The first digital advertisers included Calvin Klein, Apple, Toyota and Nike. The target audience for this particular magazine cover would be teenage males and females aged 16-19. This is because of the use of the young attractive cover star, Katy Perry. She is a role model to many young people therefore represents youth in a positive way.

MY TARGET AUDIENCE

I have decided to target my magazine at a female audience ranging between the ages of 16-30, as i feel these are the ages that these magazine seem to cover, and as I am cooperating a sense of fashion (in terms of design and audience of the fashion magazine) into my music magazine, I feel this is the perfect audience to be aiming for. Vogue and Elle both include a design that I am particularly fond of and feel I can incorporate into my music themed piece with the help of Blenders’ and Billboards’ design inspiration also. I feel these music and fashion magazines are ideal for the idea I have in mind to really suit the interest of a young adult Female music loving audience.

Focus Group research.

Using my focus group – Genre and Name of magazine.
I asked my focus group which type of music they would be most interested in reading about in a magazine; I gave them the following options:
Pop
        RnB
      Indie
       Mixture of Pop and RnB
        Other
70% said they would be more interested in a mixture of Pop and R&B whilst 20% said they would be interested in just indie and 10% said they would be more interested in other types.

The following are magazine names that I have come up with; they are all related to music and include an element of edge/fashion to fit in with the style of magazine I am going for.
Rouge
      Strobe
   Icon
    Edge
      Radar
I asked my focus group which of the names they liked more for a pop and R&B magazine which is taking on the design of a stereotypical fashion magazine or whether they could suggest anything they think suited the magazine even more so. 40% said they preferred the name Strobe, and 60% said they preferred the name Radar.

From this I have decided that my magazine will contain genres of pop and R n B to broaden the audience. I have also decided to use the name Radar as this was the most popular and it is short and recognisable.

-Creating my focus group.
In the process of planning and producing my own music magazine, I have put together a focus group containing people who are representive of my target audience, which consists of ages 16-30 and that have an interest in music. I asked them to state their opinions on decisions in which needed to be made with the magazine. This should help me to make a more appealing magazine for my target audience as these people fit the criteria that I am aiming at. I created this focus group on Facebook and will contact and keep up to date with them via this, by posting questions in need of their opinion, and they too can suggest ideas to me.

Existing media.

The magazines that I have researched are a mixture of music and fashion magazines. In order to incorporate a sense of design that the fashion magazines contain I have looked into how the pictures included are presented. It is clear that particular magazines such as Elle and Vogue use a vast amount high key lighting, with brightening colours to amplify the beauty of the icons placed upon the front covers, usually shown in a mid-shot or close-up image. Direct mode of address is also included in the images, which creates a personal relationship between the audience and the artist which relates to the uses and gratifications theory, allowing the audience to be involved with the magazine. I would like to include these features in my magazine as it will adopt the look that fashion magazines have, and seeing as my music magazine is aimed at females aged 16-30 I feel this element of fashion being included will help to attract this gender and age group – for women are stereo typically fashion orientated. I want to create a personal relationship between my magazine and the audience through direct mode of address. In music magazine I have researched, Hermeneutic code is commonly used and it is effective with intriguing the audience into the magazine. I will aim to use this in my music magazine as I want the audience to be drawn towards the magazine and be interested to read it by something that is featured on the front cover.

Using my focus group - Sell line.

I haven’t yet decided on the sell line that I will use for my magazine. So far I have the following ideas:
Music within your reach.
Reach for the music you love
Face the music

I questioned my focus group on their ideas/thoughts on which one they liked best, or if they had any alternative ideas. 70% said they preferred the sell line ‘face the music.’ whereas only 10% said they preferred ‘music within your reach’ and 20% said they liked reach for the music you love'. From this result I have decided to go with ‘face the music.’

Using my focus group - mock ups

I questioned my focus group on what they liked, didn’t like and just their general opinions on my mock ups of the front cover, contents page and double page spread I have designed so far.

90% liked the look of the front page, but one person said that more features could be added. 70% said that they liked the layout and the way the contents page was presented and that it was clear and easy to follow which made it more appealing to them. 90% said how they liked the double page spread, but a concern was that it resembles that of a fashion magazine more than a music style of magazine, but the majority agreed that it resembles a music magazine with a hint of a fashion element. They all agreed that the style and colour schemes of the front cover, contents page and double spread appealed to my target audience.
Based on what my focus group have said I will experiment with different contents pages, altering the arrangement and changing the amount of fashion elements included in this design and incorporate more of a music style.

The majority seemed to agree that they liked the way the title was presented on the front cover, and the colour scheme chosen.

Photos taken

I have taken the following photos for my magazine, however I am aware the shadowing will have to be edited out and after attempting to work with these images, they may not be ideal. It was unfortunate that I only had a small time slot in order to take these photos using this particular person and the time of day was not best for lighting resulting in these photos not being an example of my best.

Photography planning.

I like these two images and would like to achieve a photograph similar to this for my front cover. I like how the models are in mid-shot to close-up shots and are making direct eye contact with the audience, creating a relationship between the two. I also like the bright background and high key lighting for a front over image.

The above are images that I would like to base my inside images on as I feel they are the type of shot and style that I would like to incorporate in with a music element. The long shot is perfect for a double page spread. I like the idea of either having a plain and simple background, or a contrasting dark edgy background to the model, as I feel this gives it more of a music magazine theme – which I am trying to achieve.

I think these images are ideal for a contents page and I am aiming to create something like these with the use of makeup and the right dress code to fit in with the music genre.

Title fonts planning.

Above are the titles of magazines that I have researched, from looking at these four examples I have notices that most of the fonts used are in a large bold font that is either sharp sophisticated or not so much in others where the text is rounded. The fonts are not serif, making it easier to read which enables the title to stand out and be clear to the audience.
